Frequently Asked Questions

I haven’t heard of you. Are your courses legit?

100% yes. You may not have seen us on YouTube—but our team has nearly 100 years of combined cruising experience.

We’ve taught at Cruiser’s University, the American Sailing Association, and major boat shows. You’ll find our bylines in all the major cruising magazines, and we’ve been interviewed by The New York Times and The Weather Channel.

These courses aren’t just “what worked for us.” They’re built on years of teaching, writing, and helping thousands of cruisers solve real problems and live their dream.

No clickbait, no “everything is perfect,” and no constant disaster stories. Just a realistic, practical look at life aboard—so you can skip the trial and error and get to the good parts faster.

Do I have to take the courses in a specific order?

Not at all. You can start with whatever course fits your needs right now—whether that’s provisioning, hurricane prep, or just understanding the basics of life aboard. Everything is self-paced and fully flexible.

What if new courses are added later?

They’re included automatically—no extra cost, no need to sign up again. You’ll also get an email whenever we release a new course, so you never miss out.

Is this still helpful if I’ve already started cruising?

Definitely. While some courses are great for getting started, others dive deep into ongoing challenges—like staying stocked with fresh food, organizing your space, or preparing for storms. Whether you're just starting out or already living aboard, you’ll find practical info to make cruising easier and more sustainable.

Is there a schedule? Do I need to show up at a certain time?

Nope! There’s no schedule, no set times, and nothing you have to “catch.” The courses are entirely on-demand—just text and photos you can go through at your own pace, whenever it’s convenient for you.

How long will it take to complete the courses?

Most of the courses take 2–3 hours to go through the material, though some are a bit shorter or longer. That said, many people take additional time to work through the action steps—like planning meals, setting up storage, or prepping for hurricane season. You can go at your own pace, revisit lessons anytime, and focus on the topics that matter most to you right now.

Can I start the courses right away? Can I wait?

Yes — your choice! You’ll get immediate access after purchase. Your login info appears on the confirmation screen and is also emailed to you, so you can start whenever it’s convenient for you.

Is it okay if my spouse, partner, or crew goes through the material too?

Yes — we actually encourage it! If someone routinely boats with you, it's helpful for everyone to have the same understanding. We just ask that you don’t share access with others outside your boating team.

How long do I have access? Is this a subscription or will I have to pay again later?

You get lifetime access with a one-time purchase — no subscriptions, no recurring fees. That includes all future updates, too!

Are the courses video-based?

No videos. The courses are entirely text-based, with helpful photos throughout. That makes it easy to read, even with limited internet or noisy surroundings.

Do I need internet access to take the courses?

Yes, but you don’t need high-speed or perfect service. Because the courses are all text and photos (no video), they load quickly even with spotty or low-bandwidth connections.

Can I do the courses on my phone or tablet?

Absolutely. The courses work on phones, tablets, and computers—use whichever device is most convenient for you.

What if I’m not happy with the courses?

The All-Access Pass is backed by our 90-day hassle-free refund policy. If it’s not right for you, we’ll give you your money back.

What if I have another question?

Just ask! I’m Carolyn Shearlock, founder of The Boat Galley, and I’d love to help. Whether you're unsure if a course is right for you or have a question we didn’t cover, feel free to email me directly. You won’t get a bot—you’ll get a real reply from someone who’s been there.

Made Our Trip To Bahamas So Much Easier

Your online classes and materials books and quick reference booklets made the trip so much easier. We met others that were first timers like us but had no real clue on what to expect. You all made us pros before we arrived. Thank you and your team for all the resources and education you provided. We were very well prepared for all we encountered thanks to all of your resources and guidance. We are excited for our return next year.

Wonderful information!!!

We’ve sailed for several years now and can always find plenty of information on sail trim and hull types, but for information just about “boat life” in general, this is an invaluable wealth of knowledge! All of the information we need to plan our first 6 month sabbatical aboard can be found here…and since we’ve been planning this for a while, I didn’t expect to find so much that was new to me! Practical, straightforward, and written in a way that is easy to digest, the courses have taken me step by step through my mental house to make sure I’ve covered our bases for this trip and what I hope are more to come. So grateful for this resource!!!
